Scot McCloughan, the architect of the 49ers roster since 2005, is out as general manager for reasons that have nothing to do with the team's performance on the field, according to multiple reports Thursday.
McCloughan was turned loose because of personal matters, although accounts differed regarding whether he will return to his duties with the 49ers.
ESPN, quoting multiple league sources, characterized McCloughan's departure as an extended leave of absence.

Most technology stocks edged lower early Friday, as shares of Palm Inc. plunged after the handheld-device maker issued a weaker-than-expected revenue forecast.
